Nygren header hands Celtic all three points in title defence opener

Celtic began their defence of the Scottish Premiership title with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Dundee at Parkhead, securing all three points through a second-half strike from Gustaf Nygren. The result sets the tone for Ange Postecoglou’s side as they bid to retain the crown, while Dundee face an early battle to avoid the bottom of the table.

Nygren’s late strike seals Celtic’s control

Gustaf Nygren’s 71st-minute header proved the difference as Celtic moved off the mark in their title defence. The Swedish defender rose unmarked to power home from a corner, capping a cagey first half in which neither side created clear chances. Postecoglou’s side had the bulk of possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Dundee side, who defended in numbers and limited Celtic to speculative efforts from distance.

Dundee, winless in their last five away games, offered little in attack, with their best opportunity falling to a long-range effort that curled just wide. Celtic, meanwhile, saw Kyogo Furuhashi waste a gilt-edged chance in the first half when he blazed over from six yards after a quick counter. The visitors’ resistance began to fray after the interval, and Nygren’s decisive intervention arrived when a deep cross from Anthony Ralston found him unchallenged in the box.

Postecoglou’s side starts slowly but finishes strong

Ange Postecoglou’s side began the campaign in familiar fashion—dominant in possession yet short on cutting edge. The manager’s preference for a high-pressing, expansive system was evident, but Dundee’s compact shape frustrated Celtic’s rhythm. Postecoglou will be concerned by his team’s profligacy in front of goal, particularly given the quality of chances they fashioned.

The introduction of substitutes after the hour mark shifted the balance. Tomoki Iwata and Yang Hyun-jun added energy and creativity, while Liam Scales’ composure at the back provided a platform for attacks to build. The substitutions paid dividends, with Nygren’s goal arriving shortly after Iwata’s introduction. Postecoglou will hope his side can tighten up defensively and sharpen their finishing as the fixtures pile up.

Dundee’s early struggles raise relegation fears

Dundee’s performance offered little reassurance to supporters concerned about the club’s Premiership status. James McPake’s side lacked cohesion and struggled to impose themselves, managing just two shots on target all game. Their attacking forays were rare and lacked penetration, while their defensive shape was repeatedly breached by Celtic’s width.

The loss leaves Dundee bottom of the table, a position they have occupied in three of their last four league matches. With Hearts and St Mirren already showing early-season form, McPake’s men will need to regroup quickly if they are to avoid an immediate return to the Championship. Their next fixture against St Johnstone will be a crucial test of their resolve.

Celtic, by contrast, can take encouragement from the win but will know they can expect sterner tests in the coming weeks. The champions-elect will face Rangers in the Old Firm next, a fixture that could define their title ambitions early in the campaign.
