Chelsea have completed the signing of England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a two-year deal, bringing a player of his pedigree to Stamford Bridge for the first time. The 36-year-old arrived as a free agent after his contract with Brentford was terminated by mutual consent, reuniting him with manager Xabi Alonso, whose own appointment has reshaped Chelsea’s transfer strategy this summer.

“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he said. “I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction. For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible.”
Squad overhaul and the bigger picture
Henderson’s signing comes amid Chelsea’s efforts to streamline a bloated squad. The club have agreed a £31m deal for Trevoh Chalobah, who will leave for Como after nearly 20 years at Stamford Bridge, reducing the number of senior centre-backs from nine to eight. Alonso has also been linked with moves for Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana, while Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi remain in the frame for exits.
This restructuring follows Chelsea’s dismal end to last season, where they faded badly in the title race.
