Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande for a reported £34.3m, ending months of speculation and addressing a defensive crisis that threatened to derail Oliver Glasner’s project at the City Ground.
A defensive anchor arrives at a critical moment
Forest’s pursuit of Diomande intensified after Glasner attempted to sign him during his time at Crystal Palace, a clear sign of the Austrian’s long-standing admiration for the 22-year-old. The Ivory Coast international, who has spent four seasons at Sporting, arrives with a pedigree Glasner values: seven goals in 132 appearances, two Primeira Liga titles, a domestic double in 2024/25, and Champions League knockout-stage football.
His arrival follows the free transfer of Austria midfielder Xaver Schlager in July. Diomande’s arrival suggests Forest are no longer content with survival narratives but are instead building a side capable of competing in a congested mid-table.
Glasner’s back three gets its enforcer
Glasner favours a 3-5-2 system, and Diomande is expected to slot into the defensive trio alongside Nikola Milenković and Murillo. The new signing’s physical presence and aerial dominance should shore up Forest’s leaky backline, which conceded 60 goals last season—the joint-second worst in the Premier League. His experience in European competition, including a Champions League quarter-final run, adds a layer of tactical sophistication Glasner’s system demands.
Forest’s defensive frailties were exposed repeatedly last term, particularly in transitions and set-pieces. Diomande’s arrival signals Glasner’s intent to address those issues head-on, rather than relying on mid-season reinforcements. The club’s chief football officer, George Syrianos, framed the deal as a statement of ambition: “He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title-winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest.”
Diomande’s career in context
Born in Abidjan, Diomande began his career at Olympic Sport Abobo before moving to FC Midtjylland in Denmark. His breakthrough came at Sporting, where he became a first-team regular and a key figure in their recent dominance of Portuguese football. He was also part of the Ivory Coast squad that won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and featured at the 2026 World Cup, making a single appearance in a group-stage win over Curaçao.
His international pedigree adds depth to Forest’s defensive options, particularly as Glasner looks to rotate his squad in a congested fixture schedule. Diomande’s arrival also frees up Milenković to play higher up the pitch, where his passing range can be utilised more effectively.
Forest’s defensive overhaul continues a summer of targeted recruitment under Glasner. The club’s willingness to pay a premium for a player Glasner has coveted for years underscores their determination to avoid another relegation scrap. With Diomande now in place, the next challenge is integrating him into a system that has struggled for consistency.
Forest’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United in the second round will provide an early opportunity to assess his impact. Glasner will hope his new signing can steady the ship before the Premier League’s demanding run-in begins.
